Sizing the box for a typical kitchen tear-out
A standard kitchen demo produces bulky debris: base and wall cabinets, a countertop, a sink, old flooring, drywall, a soffit or two, and plenty of packaging from the new materials. For most homes, a 20 yard dumpster for a kitchen remodel gives enough room to take all of it in one rental.
Our 20-yard roll-off costs $455 with 2 tons included. It is about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide and 4.5 ft high, so long pieces like countertop sections and upper cabinets lie flat. A galley kitchen with no flooring or wall work may fit a 10-yard, while an open-concept project that removes walls often needs the 30-yard with 3 tons included.
A demo-week schedule that fits the 7-day rental
Every rental comes with 7 days, and a little planning keeps you inside that window. Order the container for the morning demo starts, not days earlier while the old kitchen is still in use. Tear out from the top down: upper cabinets, then counters, then base cabinets, then flooring.
Load as you go so debris doesn't pile up inside the house. Break down cabinet boxes so they nest flat, and put heavy items like tile and stone counters on the floor of the container first. If the project slips, extra days are $25 each, and we pick up as soon as you call. Because we don't offer swap-outs, a second container is a new rental if you need more room.
- Day 1: uppers, soffits and backsplash
- Day 2: counters, sink and base cabinets
- Days 3–4: flooring and damaged drywall
- Days 5–7: packaging and final cleanup

Appliances, counters and things to keep out
Granite, quartz and laminate counters can go in, as can tile, plywood subfloor and drywall. Stone counters are heavy, so mention them when you book. Refrigerators, freezers and other Freon appliances need to be tagged as evacuated before they can be loaded. Leave out paint that is still wet, cleaners, cooking oil and other liquids.
If you'd rather not handle old appliances yourself, our junk removal crew can haul them along with any furniture. For the complete rules, read what you can put in a dumpster.
Keeping neighbors, HOAs and driveways happy
Kitchens are usually remodeled while the family still lives at home, so the container needs to work around daily life. We place driveway protection boards under every box at no charge and can position it to leave room for a car. Many HOA neighborhoods ask that containers stay on the driveway rather than the street, so check your community's rules before delivery.
A container on your own driveway normally doesn't need a permit. If it has to sit on a public street, the city may require right-of-way approval, so check with the city or call us to talk through placement.
Where we deliver kitchen renovation containers
We book kitchen renovation dumpster rental jobs all over the region from our Portsmouth yard. In Virginia Beach, 1970s split-levels in Kempsville and Kings Grant are a common sight, and in Norfolk we often place boxes behind older homes in Larchmont and Park Place where the alley offers the best access. Visit our Virginia Beach dumpster service or Newport News dumpster rental page for local details.
We also cover Chesapeake, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, York County and Isle of Wight County. Doing the bathroom at the same time? See our bathroom remodel dumpster page, then call or text 757-250-7985 to book.
Questions We Hear Most
What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?
Most kitchen remodels fit in a 20-yard dumpster, which is $455 with 2 tons included. It holds cabinets, counters, flooring and drywall from an average kitchen. Smaller galley kitchens may fit a 10-yard, and open-concept projects that remove walls may need a 30-yard.
Can I throw my old refrigerator in the dumpster?
Only if it has been professionally evacuated and tagged to show the refrigerant was removed. Untagged Freon appliances can't be loaded. If you don't want to deal with that, our junk removal crew can haul the appliance for you; send photos for a quote.
Are granite countertops too heavy for a dumpster?
Granite and quartz are dense, but a typical kitchen's worth of stone fits in a 20-yard as long as the total load stays near the 2-ton allowance. Place stone on the floor of the container and let us know about it when you book so we can help estimate weight.
How long does a kitchen remodel dumpster rental last?
Every rental includes 7 days, which covers demolition and cleanup for most kitchens. If you need it longer, each extra day is $25. When you are finished, call or text 757-250-7985 and we will schedule pickup. Remember that we do not offer swap-outs, so a second container would be a new rental.
Do I need permission from my HOA for a dumpster?
Many HOA communities have rules about where containers can sit and for how long, so check with your association before delivery. Keeping the box on your driveway is usually the simplest option, and we place protection boards underneath at no charge.
Can you deliver the kitchen dumpster the same day?
Same-day delivery is available on weekdays when we have a container open. We don't offer same-day delivery on weekends, but weekend deliveries can be booked in advance at no extra charge. Calling a few days before demo day is the safest plan.
