Heavy material belongs in a small container

It sounds backwards, but a smaller box is the right call for broken concrete, soil, brick and stone. These materials weigh far more per cubic yard than household debris, so a large container would reach its weight limit while still looking half empty. Our 10-yard dumpster is the standard pick for this kind of work.

The 10-yard runs $375 with 2 tons included, and like every rental it comes with 7 days, delivery, pickup and disposal in one flat rate. It measures roughly 12 ft long, 8 ft wide and 3.5 ft high, and the short walls make it easier to wheelbarrow or shovel material over the side.

Fill line rules you need to follow

With a dirt dumpster rental or a concrete load, the most important rule is simple: do not fill it to the top. A container packed level with dense material can exceed what our truck is allowed to carry on public roads. Overweight loads may face a DOT penalty of $125 per ton on top of the standard $110-per-ton overage, and a dangerously heavy box may need to be partially unloaded before it can be hauled.

As a rough habit, keep heavy material well below the rim and spread it evenly across the floor instead of piling it at one end. If you are unsure how much your slab or soil pile will weigh, call 757-250-7985 before loading and we will help you plan.

  • Spread weight evenly from front to back
  • Keep concrete and dirt well below the top rail
  • Break slabs into pieces you can place, not drop
  • Ask us before mixing heavy and light debris

Projects that typically call for this box

Homeowners order a 10 yard dumpster for concrete when they tear out a cracked driveway apron, an old patio, walkway pavers or a backyard shed slab. Landscapers use it for excavated soil from garden beds and pond digs, and contractors grab one for block foundations, brick steps and tile mortar beds. Rock, gravel and sand fall into the same heavy category.

Clean loads of one material are easiest to plan around. If your job also produces lumber, drywall or general clutter, consider handling that separately; our residential dumpster rental page covers lighter mixed debris, and the guide to what you can put in a dumpster lists the items we can't accept.

Placement on soft ground and long driveways

A loaded heavy-debris container sits hard on whatever is underneath it. We lay down driveway protection boards at no charge, but solid, level ground is still the best spot. Rural lots in southern Chesapeake, Suffolk and Isle of Wight County often have gravel or grass drives; let us know so we can pick a firm location the truck can reach in wet weather too.

If the box has to sit on a public street, the city may require right-of-way approval, so check with the city or call us to talk through placement. A container on your own driveway or private lot normally doesn't need a permit.

Heavy-debris hauling across Hampton Roads

Our Portsmouth home base keeps us close to every job. We regularly place a concrete dumpster in Virginia Beach for patio rebuilds in Salem and Red Mill, handle concrete disposal in Chesapeake for new-construction lots in Hickory, and haul brick and soil from older properties in Norfolk and Portsmouth.

We also serve Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk, York County and Isle of Wight County. For a side-by-side look at each container, visit our dumpster sizes page, or see how overages and fees work on the dumpster rental cost guide.

Questions We Hear Most

What size dumpster is best for concrete removal?

A 10-yard dumpster is usually best for concrete. It costs $375 with 2 tons included and a 7-day rental. Concrete is so dense that weight becomes the limit long before space does, so a bigger box rarely helps and can tempt you to overload it.

Can I fill a dumpster to the top with dirt?

No. Dirt, concrete and similar heavy materials should stay well below the top rail. A full container of soil can exceed safe road weight, which can lead to overage charges of $110 per ton and a DOT overweight penalty of $125 per ton. Call us before loading if you are unsure.

Can I mix concrete with other debris in the same dumpster?

You can, but mixing makes weight harder to predict and can push you over the included 2 tons. If you have a large amount of light debris as well, it often makes sense to keep the heavy material together and plan the lighter waste separately. We can help you decide.

Do you take rebar, brick and asphalt in a concrete dumpster?

Concrete with rebar, brick, block, pavers, stone and asphalt chunks can generally go in a heavy-debris container. Keep out liquids, chemicals, wet paint and anything that may contain asbestos. Tell us what you are loading when you book so we can confirm everything is acceptable.

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster for dirt in Hampton Roads?

Our 10-yard dumpster is $375 with 2 tons included, plus a $35 fuel surcharge per rental. Weight over the allowance is $110 per ton, and extra days beyond the 7-day rental are $25 each. Delivery, pickup and disposal are included in the flat rate.

Will a heavy dumpster crack my driveway?

We place protection boards under every container at no charge to spread the load. Still, choose a solid, level spot, avoid freshly poured concrete, and keep the box off septic fields or soft soil. If you are unsure about your surface, ask us when you book.
