Why shingles change the math on container size

A roof tear-off doesn't fill a container the way a cleanout does. Old asphalt shingles, felt and nails are dense, so a dumpster for roofing shingles usually hits its weight limit long before the debris reaches the top rail. That is why we size roofing jobs by weight first and volume second.

Every roof is different. The number of squares, how many layers are coming off, and whether rotten decking is being replaced all change the total. Before you book, tell us the square count and layer count and we'll help you pick a container and estimate whether you'll stay inside the included tonnage. Going over is billed at $110 per ton, so a quick conversation up front keeps the invoice predictable.

Our go-to choice: the 20-yard roll-off

For most single-family re-roofs we recommend a 20 yard dumpster for roofing. The 20-yard dumpster rental runs $455 with 2 tons included, a 7-day rental, and delivery, pickup and disposal built into the flat rate. At roughly 22 ft long, 8 ft wide and 4.5 ft high, the low walls are easy to toss into from a ladder or a roof chute.

Small jobs such as a porch roof, a detached garage or a shed can fit a 10-yard container, which carries the same 2-ton allowance in a smaller footprint. Larger homes with multiple layers may need a second rental once the first one is picked up, since we don't do swap-outs. Compare every option on our dumpster sizes guide.

Flat-Rate Roll-Off Pricing

Delivery, pickup and disposal included. $35.00 fuel surcharge · $110.00/ton over the included weight · $25.00/day extra days · $100.00 per mattress. Full cost breakdown.

Setting up the drop on roofing day

Placement matters more on a roof job than almost anywhere else. Your crew wants the container close to the drip line so debris lands inside instead of in the flower beds. We put down driveway protection boards at no charge and can angle the box so the open end faces your work area.

Plan the week around the weather. Hampton Roads summer storms roll in fast, so many roofers book delivery the day before tear-off and schedule pickup as soon as the dry-in is finished. If rain pushes the job back, extra days are $25 each. Keep the area in front of the container clear on pickup day; a blocked box can trigger a $125 dry run fee.

  • Share squares, pitch and layer count when you call
  • Mark the spot you want before the truck arrives
  • Keep vehicles and trailers clear of the access path
  • Leave a few inches below the top rail so the load can be tarped

What can ride along with the shingles

Shingles, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, old gutters, ridge vents and damaged plywood decking can all go in the same load. Skylight frames and wood trim are fine too. What can't go in: tar buckets with liquid left in them, solvent cans, adhesives that are still wet, and anything containing asbestos. Some older roofs used asbestos-containing materials, so if you suspect it, have it tested before tear-off.

Our list of what you can put in a dumpster covers the full set of rules. If the project grows into a gut job inside the house, our kitchen remodel dumpster page explains how to handle the interior debris.

Re-roofing across all nine service areas

We run roll-offs out of our Portsmouth yard on Airline Blvd to roofers and homeowners throughout the region. We see plenty of ranch and split-level re-roofs in Kempsville and Great Neck, so a roofing dumpster in Virginia Beach is one of our most common bookings, and the newer subdivisions in Greenbrier and Grassfield keep our roofing dumpster service in Chesapeake busy.

Older two-story homes in Ghent and Colonial Place are routine for Norfolk, and we deliver to Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, York County and Isle of Wight County as well. Contractors who order regularly should look at the Priority Pro contractor program. Call or text 757-250-7985 with your roof details and we'll get a box on the calendar.

Questions We Hear Most

What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement?

Most single-family re-roofs fit well in a 20-yard dumpster, which costs $455 with 2 tons included. Because shingles are heavy, the real limit is usually weight rather than space. Tell us how many squares and layers are coming off and we will help you choose the right size and estimate your tonnage before delivery.

How many squares of shingles fit in a 20-yard roofing dumpster?

It depends on the shingle type, the number of layers and how much decking is being replaced, so we don't give a single number. Asphalt shingles are dense, and a multi-layer tear-off adds weight quickly. Call 757-250-7985 with your square count and layers and we will talk through whether one container covers the job.

What happens if my roofing debris goes over 2 tons?

Anything over the included tonnage is billed at $110 per ton after the load is weighed. The 20-yard and 10-yard containers each include 2 tons, and the 30-yard includes 3 tons. Loading only roofing material and leaving out unrelated heavy items helps you stay closer to the allowance.

Can I put roof decking and old gutters in with the shingles?

Yes. Plywood or OSB decking, felt, flashing, drip edge, gutters and ridge vents can all go in the same container as shingles. Leave out liquids, wet adhesives, solvent cans and any material that may contain asbestos. If you are unsure about an item, ask before you load it.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway during a roofing job?

We place driveway protection boards under the container at no extra charge to help spread the load. On a roofing job the box often sits in the driveway for several days, so pick a flat, solid spot close to the work area and keep cars clear of the path the truck needs on pickup day.

How long can I keep a roofing dumpster?

Every rental includes 7 days, which covers most residential re-roofs even with a weather delay or two. If rain stretches the job, additional days are $25 each. Call or text us when the tear-off is done and we will schedule the pickup.
