Why Garages Here Fill Up and Go Bad
Coastal humidity is hard on anything stored in a garage. Cardboard boxes soften, mildew creeps into stored furniture, and metal shelving rusts at the feet. In flood-prone parts of Hampton and Norfolk, one high-water event can turn a stored collection into a wet pile overnight.
That's usually when people call for a garage cleanout. The good news is that most of what's in there, from warped particleboard to old exercise equipment, is ordinary debris that hauls away easily.
Detached garages and workshops on bigger lots in Suffolk and Isle of Wight tend to collect even more: old farm tools, scrap lumber, rusted bikes and project cars' worth of parts. The approach is the same, just on a larger scale, and a 20-yard is often the better fit there.
Pull Liquids, Paint and Batteries Out First
Garages are where the problem items hide, and they cannot go in a roll-off. Set these aside before the container arrives or before our crew shows up:
- Motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze and other automotive fluids
- Pool chemicals, pesticides, weed killer and cleaning solvents
- Wet or half-full paint cans (fully dried cans are fine)
- Car, boat, lawn mower and power-tool batteries
- Any container with liquid still sloshing inside

Getting Leftover Paint Ready to Toss
Latex paint can be left open in a dry spot until it hardens completely; once it's solid, the can is accepted. Tires are taken at $75 each and need to be listed when you book. The full rundown is on our what can you put in a dumpster page, and your city's household hazardous waste program is the place for chemicals and batteries.
A Container in the Driveway or a Crew at the Door
For a typical one- or two-car garage, a 10-yard dumpster at $375 with 2 tons included is usually plenty. It's about 12 feet long, so it parks on most driveways without blocking the garage door, and driveway protection boards come with it. A packed garage plus an attic may need the 20-yard at $455.
If the heavy pieces are the problem, like a workbench, an old chest freezer or a treadmill, our junk removal crew lifts and carries everything. Text photos to 757-250-7985 and we'll quote by volume.
A Two-Day Plan for the Weekend Warrior
Book a Friday delivery ahead of time; weekend deliveries are scheduled in advance at no extra charge, but same-day delivery isn't available on Saturday or Sunday. On day one, pull everything onto the driveway and split it into keep, donate and toss. On day two, load the toss pile heavy-first, sweep the slab and put the keepers back on shelves. You still have the rest of the 7-day rental if it runs long.
We clear garages across the region, from HOA streets in Chesapeake and Kempsville in Virginia Beach to Denbigh in Newport News.
Questions We Hear Most
Can I throw old paint cans in a garage cleanout dumpster?
Only if the paint is completely dry. Wet or partially full cans count as liquids and can't go in the container. Leave latex cans open somewhere dry until the paint is solid, then toss them in. Oil-based paint, stains and solvents should go to your city's household hazardous waste collection instead.
What should I do with old car and lawn mower batteries?
Batteries of any kind are prohibited in our dumpsters and are not something our crew hauls in a regular load. Check with your city's household hazardous waste program for drop-off options. Set them aside before cleanout day so they don't end up in a box headed for the container.
Is a 10-yard dumpster big enough for a two-car garage?
For most two-car garages, yes. A 10-yard measures about 12 feet long, 8 feet wide and 3.5 feet high and includes 2 tons. If the garage is stacked to the ceiling or you're also clearing an attic or shed, step up to the 20-yard at $455 so you don't run out of room halfway through.
Will your crew take a workbench or a heavy safe?
Built-in or freestanding workbenches, shelving units and heavy tool chests are all common garage cleanout items. Very heavy pieces like a gun safe should be described in detail with photos when you ask for a quote, so we can bring the right number of people and plan the route out.
Can I keep the dumpster longer than a week?
Yes. Every rental includes 7 days, and you can keep it longer for $25 per extra day. Let us know before the scheduled pickup if your garage cleanout is taking longer than planned, and we'll adjust the date. Swap-outs aren't offered, so size up if you expect to fill it.
Can you clean out a detached garage or workshop too?
Yes. Detached garages, workshops and pole barns are handled the same way as an attached garage. Rural properties in Suffolk and Isle of Wight County often have long driveways, so tell us how far the building sits from the road and whether a truck can reach it on firm ground. That helps us plan dumpster placement or the crew's carry.
