Refrigerators and Freezers: The Freon Rule

Anything that cools with refrigerant, including refrigerators, chest freezers, wine coolers, dehumidifiers and window AC units, has to be handled differently. These units can go in a roll-off only after the Freon has been evacuated and the appliance is tagged to show it.

Booking our crew instead of a container? List every refrigerant appliance in your quote request so we can explain how it will be handled. Either way, empty the food, prop the doors or tape them shut for the carry, and unplug the unit a day early so it can drain any defrost water.

Washers, Dryers and Dishwashers

Shut off the water valves and disconnect the supply hoses on a washer before removal day, then run the drain hose into a bucket to empty what's left in the pump. Electric dryers just need to be unplugged and the vent hose pulled.

Gas dryers and gas ranges are different: have the gas line shut off and capped by a qualified professional before we arrive. Our crew removes appliances that are already disconnected; we don't do plumbing, gas or electrical work.

Water Heaters

A tank water heater is one of the heaviest things in a house, and it's even heavier with water still inside. Most homeowners have the plumber who installs the new unit drain and disconnect the old one. Once it's empty and disconnected, it can go in a dumpster as regular metal debris or ride out with our crew.

Water heaters count toward tonnage like anything else, so a few of them during a whole-house renovation are worth keeping in mind when you pick a size.

Tankless units, water softeners and well-pressure tanks follow the same rule: drained, disconnected, then hauled. Expansion tanks and old copper or galvanized pipe from the swap can ride along in the same load.

Swapping Appliances During a Remodel

A kitchen or laundry room renovation often pulls out several appliances at once along with cabinets and flooring. A 10-yard dumpster at $375 with 2 tons included handles a small kitchen tear-out; bigger projects usually need the 20-yard at $455. Our kitchen remodel dumpster page goes into sizing, and the dumpster rules list what's accepted.

Scrap metal from appliances is recycled where possible.

Tight Stairs, Narrow Doors and Older Homes

Older houses in Park Place, Colonial Place and Phoebus were built long before side-by-side fridges. Measure doorways before the new appliance shows up, because the old one usually has to come out the same way. Our crew handles stairs, tight landings and back porches in Norfolk, Hampton and the rest of our service area.

Outside the cities, homes in Chesapeake and Suffolk often keep a second fridge or chest freezer in a detached garage or shed. Tell us where it sits and whether there's a gravel or grass path to cross, and we'll plan the carry.

Questions We Hear Most

Can I put an old refrigerator in a dumpster?

Only if the Freon has been evacuated by a qualified technician and the unit is tagged to show it. Untagged refrigerators, freezers and AC units are prohibited in our dumpsters. If you don't have the refrigerant removed, ask about having our crew take the unit and we'll explain the options.

Do I have to disconnect my washer and dryer before pickup?

Yes. Turn off the water, disconnect the hoses and unplug both machines before the crew arrives. For a gas dryer, a qualified professional needs to shut off and cap the gas line first. Our team removes and hauls appliances but does not disconnect plumbing, gas or electrical connections.

Will you pick up a single appliance?

Yes. One old washer, a garage freezer or a dead dishwasher is a normal pickup. Send a photo and tell us where it is in the house, including any stairs, and we'll quote it based on the item. Adding a second appliance while the crew is already there is usually an easy addition.

Can a water heater go in the dumpster?

A water heater that has been fully drained and disconnected can go in a dumpster with other renovation debris. Leave the gas or electrical disconnect to a licensed plumber or electrician. Tanks are heavy, so count them toward the included weight on your rental when you're deciding between sizes.

What about stoves, microwaves and dishwashers?

Electric ranges, microwaves, dishwashers and trash compactors don't contain refrigerant, so they can go in a dumpster once they're unplugged and disconnected. Gas ranges need the gas line capped by a professional first. Our crew can also haul them away if you don't want to load them yourself.

Are old appliances recycled?

Scrap metal from washers, dryers, water heaters and other appliances is recycled where possible. Units with refrigerant need the Freon evacuated and tagged before they can be processed with other debris. If recycling matters to you, mention it when you request a quote and we'll tell you how your appliances will be handled.
